Unser Austausch mit Oxford, England
Vom Montag bis Freitag (15.-19.1.2024) sind Schüler*innnen aus den Klassenstufen 9-12 nach Oxford geflogen und haben dort einen unvergesslichen Schüler*innenaustausch erlebt. Mitgekommen sind insgesamt 26 Vierzehn- bis Achzehnjährige, sowie unsere Lehrerinnen Frau Borges und Frau Grieshammer.
Am Abflugtag waren alle sehr aufgeregt. Wir sind gut und ohne große Schwierigkeiten durch die verschiedenen Kontrollen des BER gekommen. Nach zwei Stunden Flug und anderthalb Stunden Busfahrt waren wir an der Cheney School, wo wir sehr herzlich von unseren Austauschschüler*innen in Empfang genommen wurden. Anschließend sind wir mit ihnen nach Hause gegangen.
Am nächsten Morgen haben wir zusammen mit unseren Partner*innen die ersten Schulstunden verbracht. Anders als in Deutschland beginnt deren Schule erst um 8:30 Uhr, wobei die erste halbe Stunde „Tutorzeit“ ist, was heißt, dass die Anwesenheit überprüft sowie Neuigkeiten oder bald anstehende Events angekündigt werden. Die einheitliche Schuluniform und die Organisation des Probefeueralarms, der an dem Tag stattfand, haben einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen. Beispielsweise mussten sich während des Feueralarms über 1.000 Schüler*innen in kompletter Stille geordnet auf dem Schulhof aufstellen. Dies wurde sogar einmal wiederholt, da sie nicht leise genug waren. Nachdem der Feueralarm überstanden und die ersten Stunden vorüber waren, haben wir uns mit einem Bus auf dem Weg in die Innenstadt von Oxford gemacht. Dort hatten wir kurz Zeit diese selbst zu erkunden. Anschließend hatten wir eine geführte Tour, auf der wir viel über die Geschichte Oxfords gelernt und ein College besichtigt haben.

School Exchange with Oxford in January 2024
During the week from 15th to the 19th of January our group had the chance to experience the everyday life of an Oxfordian teenager, as well as to discover the iconic city of Oxford and Great Britain’s capital, London.
On Monday, after the two-hour flight to London-Heathrow and a one-and-a
-half-hour bus ride to Oxford, we finally arrived at Cheney School. The rest of the day was spent with our exchange families, doing various activities.
Tuesday was when the real fun started. After morning classes with our exchange partners (during which we even experienced a fire drill) the German group was transferred to the city center. There we got some free time to spend walking around in small groups before our guided tour of Oxford colleges. Did you know that there are 39 colleges in this relatively small city? In the evening, we went bowling with the British group.
On Wednesday we went on our day trip to London. There we saw many famous sights, like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the London Eye. But the most fun was the free time. Many of us used that time to buy souvenirs and visit famous stores, like the Lego store. Some were even foolish enough to try British food. After that we took a train back to Oxford, arriving very late.
On Thursday, we once again had the opportunity to attend classes before being transferred to the city of Oxford and visiting the History of Science Museum, where we learned about ancient as well as modern astronomy. Afterwards we went back to Cheney, where we attended afternoon classes. After classes a lot of people had free time, so my exchange partner Pablo, his friend Jake, Jake’s exchange partners Max and Andreas and I decided to go out. We decided to go to a bar-restaurant called “The Alchemist”. The food was great, and the drinks (non-alcoholic of course) were just amazing. My drink changed colors and Max’s drink appeared to be boiling. That night was very exciting.
Sadly, Friday was already our last day. After attending morning classes and visiting Oxford one last time, it was time to say goodbye and to head home. After a coach ride to London-Heathrow and spending some time in the humongous airport, we, at last, got on the flight back to Berlin.
The exchange programme was an amazing experience for all of us. During these 5 days, our English skills improved significantly. Hopefully, we will get a chance to go on an exchange again.
